Because EW is committed to slow fashion, our goal is not only to create long-lasting, high quality garments, but to help preserve them so they can be worn over and over again.
To prevent damage to your clothes in the wash, here are some basic tips to keep in mind:
Washing is the most important information on a clothing label, and tells you whether a garment can be washed at home (in a washing machine or hand washed) or needs to be dry cleaned.
The wash symbol is:
If the symbol has an X over it (), the garment cannot be hand or machine washed.
The numbers inside the wash symbol () indicate the washing temperature. We recommend washing EW garments at low temperatures to preserve the fabrics.
The symbol for hand wash only (usually for delicate clothing) is:
Tip: If you don’t want to spend hours ironing, wash your clothes at lower temperatures using a low spin. This will help prevent fabrics from falling apart at the seams and keep them from wrinkling. It’s also advisable not to overload the washing machine.
EW does not recommend the use of chlorine-based bleaches to wash white blouses and t-shirts.
The bleach symbol is:
If the symbol is crossed out (), bleach should not be used on the garment at all.
Tumble drying is increasingly popular these days because it’s quicker and easier than air drying. But beware that only a small percentage of clothes can be placed in a dryer without damage. If you have a dryer at home, be sure to follow the instructions on your garment’s label.
The symbol for drying is:
If the symbol is crossed out (), avoid putting the garment in a dryer.
Tip: If you want to avoid ironing your clothes after washing, take them out of the washing machine as soon as the cycle is finished, shake them, stretch them out a bit and dry them on hangers.
Most of us hate ironing, but unfortunately you can’t get around it with certain fabrics, especially those made of natural materials, such as cotton and linen. Thankfully, most EW garments are made of mixed materials and contain elastane that stretches, so less ironing is needed.
